Named for Queen Victoria’s 4th daughter Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, this province joined confederation on Sept.1 1905 with Edmonton as it’s capital city. The southwestern section of the province is dominated by the Rocky Mountains that give way to foothills forming a gentler link with the prairie landscape. The province covers 661 848 square kilometers and is famous for (among other things) Banff and Jasper Parks, cattle ranches, Calgary Stampede Rodeo as well as oil and natural gas deposits.
