This province consists of two distinct geographical entities: the island Newfoundland, and Labrador, on the mainland bordering Quebec. In 1948 Newfoundlanders voted in favour of joining the Canadian Confederation, becoming its newest province in 1949. In 2001 the province’s name was changed to Newfoundland and Labrador. Its largest city, St. John’s, is also the historic commercial centre and capital.
